DAY OF THE DEAD (ORIGINAL SCRIPT)
NOTE: READ FIRST!!!!

The script that was finally filmed was not the original script. George Romero was at odds with Laurel Entertainment over the budget of the film. When the original script was written - both Romero and Laurel Entertainment were extremely happy with it. Laurel Entertainent decided to allocate 7 million dollars for the budget of the film. However this was on the assurance that the film would receive an R rating. Unfortunately this meant that the special effects would have to pass the censors.
Romero was not happy with this arrangement and wanted to produce an unrated version in order to preserve the horrific special effects. Laurel Entertainment decided they would only supply 3.5 million dollars for the film - since an unrated film would not be able to return sufficient revenue to cover a budget of 7 million dollars.

Romero was faced with a problem. The existing script could not be filmed on the reduced budget. As a result - he was forced to quickly rewrite the script to something that could be filmed for 3.5 million. The Day of the Dead that you see today is the result. It contains many elements from the original script as well as a few of the characters.
The original script contained zombies that had been domesticated and trained to function as soldiers. As part of the rewrite process, George Romero decided to take this idea and move it back a few years so that the zombie experiments were still in their infancy. Dr Logan became the pioneer of zombie domestication.

Summary of the Original Script
The original script is an epic story and I would recommend that you spare an hour or two to read it. The story begins with a group of 4 survivors trying to locate boat fuel. They not only have to battle the living dead, but aggressive bandits as well. The group have a fatal encounter with a group of armed men who wanted to take control of their boat, and Sarah is the only survivor.

She eventually finds her way to an island in the Florida Keys. The island contains an underground military complex that is being utilised by a group of scientists and soldiers. They are all under the control of the insane governer of Florida who wants to take over the world by using an army of trained zombies. The original script does not contain the same level of science vs military theme of the revised script. Rather we see the scientists working in conjunction with the military to train the zombies.

This section of the script is incredibly interesting. The zombies are given a coloured top depending on their level of training. The white and blue coloured zombies have the least amount of training and are kept in isolation. There is a small group of zombies with red tops who are easily the most promising subjects. Bub is one the the red top zombies.

The soldiers and scientists are all issued with an orange vest and the zombies are trained not to attack or shoot someone who wears one. The zombies are trained in the use of firearms and unsuccessful attempts are also made to get the zombies to eat alligator meat.

Non-conforming humans have been placed in a crime-infested concentration camp - and are used by the soldiers as food for their zombie army. Sarah meets up with a few people from this camp - and they all attempt to devise an escape from the island using her boat. However there is another faction within the camp - led by the crazy Dr Logan - that intend to get revenge on their captors.

The story comes to a tremendous climax. As you can imagine, the poorly trained zombies are eventually released en masse throughout the complex - in the same manner as the film - and a gore fest results. When reading the script, it is easy to see how it could not be filmed on the reduced budget. I will not spoil the ending for you. Just go and read it!!!!
